Series 4 Episode 7 – In Safe Hands

Andrew’s best mate Phil from Liverpool comes to stay with he and Kirsty. Andrew tells Kirsty that he and Phil don’t have that much in common anymore. He says they have drifted apart.

Will, Kate and Erica have supper together. Erica is obviously envious of Will’s growing affection for Kate.

Pat Hewland returns to The Beeches. She tells Will and Erica that the FHSA have changed their minds about reducing The Beeches to a two partner practice. Since they have taken on a lot of Phillip Ramsden’s patients they are pushing them back to a three partner practice.

Russ is pushing Kim for a dinner date. She agrees – anything for a quiet life!

Will tells Andrew that he and Erica would like to offer him the partnership. Andrew is surprised but says it sounds good. Although he still has to talk it over with Kirsty.

Andrew’s patient Roy Bennet has a tumor on his liver. He decides he doesn’t want an operation that carries a great risk with it. Andrew thinks Roy should have the operation and pushes Roy’s family to believe the same. Chloe and James talk to Roy’s daughter Julie, and share their experiences about Chloe’s cancer. Julie accepts the fact that Roy doesn’t want the operation and says she’ll enjoy the two good years he has left.

Kim and Russ have dinner. Will and Kate bump into them and witness an upset between the two leading to Russ walking out on Kim. Will tells Kate that he thinks Andrew will take the partnership. Will also pulls Russ to one side and tells him he is not impressed by his behaviour towards Kim.

After pressure from Julie, Roy decides to have the operation. However he tells Andrew he is not happy with his interference and is only having the operation to keep his daughter happy.

Kirsty tells Phil that she thinks Andrew has changed. Phil says there’s no way that Andrew would let her down because they’ve been together for too long.

Will, Kate, Erica, Kirsty and Russ attend the FHSA ball. Andrew is running late as he’s at the hospital with Roy. Kirsty is confused when Kate says that she and Will think Andrew will take the partnership. When Andrew finally arrives Will and Kate notice obvious tension between Andrew and Kirsty.

Andrew and Kirsty leave the ball and argue in the car park. He says it is the wrong time for her to do teacher training as they should be trying for a family. Kirsty says it is always her who makes the sacrifices. They then argue about Roy Bennett and Kirsty tells Andrew he is not the man she married.

ANDREW: Maybe I have changed. Maybe I’ve grown up. I can’t help that
KIRSTY: Maybe I don’t like what you’ve become

Whilst dancing with Erica, Russ collapses. Will and Erica take him to The Beeches. They suspect a heart condition. The following day Will breaks the news to Kim who becomes increasingly concerned. Will later realises that Russ is actually suffering from caffeine overdose from drinking too much coffee. Will tells Russ he may still be in with a chance with Kim as he’s told her he has a heart condition. Russ begs Kim for forgiveness and she agrees they can give it another go.

Andrew goes to visit Roy and is devastated to be told that Roy died after the operation. Julie blames Andrew for what has happened and says now instead of two more years with her father she has nothing.

Andrew returns home to find Kirsty getting into a taxi – she’s going back to Liverpool. She tells him it’s not the partnership at The Beeches – it’s everything, it’s him. Will goes to see Andrew and Andrew breaks down and tells Will he should’ve listened to what Roy wanted instead of pushing for the operation. He tells Will that Kirsty has left him.
